How To Not Forget Your Retainer

After you’ve gotten your braces off or finished with your final set of Invisalign aligners, you’ll have to wear your retainer regularly to make sure that your new smile stays perfect. If you don’t wear it, your teeth will actually start to shift back towards their original position before you started your orthodontic treatment, which is the last thing you want to happen.

Unfortunately, once you’re done with the main phase of orthodontic treatment, it’s easy to fall out of your typical routine, and when that happens, it becomes easier to forget to wear your retainer or lose it altogether. Especially for those who had braces, you now have an appliance that you need to regularly put on and take off, instead of having it attached to your teeth at all times. To make sure that your perfect smile lasts for a lifetime, here are a few helpful tips and tricks that you can use to never forget your retainer!

Make Your Retainers Case Stand Out

When you get your retainer, your orthodontist will give you a case for it so you can store it whenever you take it off. While most retainer cases already come in a variety of vibrant colors, making your case stand out even more will help you never forget to grab your retainer and leave it sitting out in the open. Stickers are a simple & fun way to make your retainer case truly yours, and we’ve seen this work for both kids and adults! Just find some stickers that you like and cover your retainer case with them. With the eclectic collection of images and colors, there’s no way your eyes are going to overlook that case sitting on the table before you leave!

Leave Yourself Notes & Reminders

Never underestimate the power of a simple note, from basic sticky notes to a timed reminder on your smartphone. At CFSS Braces, we find that reminder notes for wearing your retainer are most effective when you have a lot of them, so leave yourself notes all over the place to reduce the chance of you forgetting your retainer. A note on your mirror for when you’re brushing your teeth in the morning or before bed, a note on the door before you leave the house, and anywhere else you think could be helpful for remembering your retainer!

Make It A Group Effort

When it comes to remembering things like your retainer, it’s better to have more minds on the job instead of just one. Ask your friends, family, or significant other to help you remember your retainer, so even if you forget, there’s a good chance that one of them will remind you! Even if those you ask for help still forget, simply the act of telling someone about your retainer will actually help you remember it later, and the lower the chance of your forgetting your retainer, the better off you are!

Get Into A Routine

During your orthodontic treatment, you probably got into a routine with your braces or Invisalign where you always remembered to floss between your brackets or brush your aligners. Try to think of your retainer the same way. If you put your retainer on or take it off at the same time every day, it will eventually become ingrained in your mind as a part of your daily routine. The key is consistency, because the better you are at remembering to wear your retainer or take it with you, the easier it will be to quickly identify that you forgot it in the instance that you do.
