Orthodontic Emergency Care
Thankfully, true orthodontic emergencies are rare, but some situations can be classified as "emergency" and need immediate medical attention. In general, if you feel that your life or jaw may be in serious danger, it's best to head to an emergency room or call 911 and tell us what happened after you've been seen by a medical professional. In other cases, it's best to go to your dentist first, as they'll be better equipped to take care of problems in the teeth and mouth. For problems with your braces, aligners, or orthodontic appliance, please call our office.
What To Do In Case of Emergency
There are a few situations where you should call us so we can assess the situation and schedule you an emergency repair appointment. These include:
- Broken Brackets: If you break a bracket or one falls off, you'll need to call us ASAP so we can get your braces fixed. If the bracket comes loose and is still attached by the archwire, just leave it there, but if it falls off, be sure to bring it to your appointment. If it's irritating you, cover it with a piece of cotton or dental wax.
- Broken Archwire: If your archwire comes loose or breaks, you'll also need to call us for an appointment. Make sure to keep any pieces of your braces that fall off and bring them to the appointment.
- Loose Brackets or Wires: If your archwire or brackets are loose or wiggling around, call us and tell us what's happening. We can then determine how to proceed.
- Pain, Soreness, & Discomfort: In general, it's common for patients to feel pressure, soreness, or mild pain for a few days to a week after an appointment. This is generally mild and can be treated with a warm cloth or an over the counter pain reliever like Tylenol. If the pain is too severe to handle or doesn't go away, though, it's time to call us. If the pain is too severe to stand, you can use a pair of nail clippers that have been cleaned and sterilized in alcohol to clip your archwire. If possible, please call us before doing this - but in any case, call us immediately so we can schedule you a repair appointment.
