Types of Appliances

At CFSS Braces, we understand that every patient has different orthodontic needs and desires. Because of this, we’ve made it our goal to supply the widest range of orthodontic treatment methods possible. We don’t only offer North Syracuse and Fayetteville Invisalign and braces – we offer a plethora of effective orthodontic appliances as well. The types of orthodontic appliances that we provide include the following.

elastics (rubber bands)

Elastics (Rubber Bands)

By wearing elastics or rubber bands, you’ll improve the fit of both your upper and lower teeth. It’s important for you to wear them as prescribed; they work much more efficiently if they’re worn properly.

The Forsus Fatigue Resistant Device is an alternative to headgear which promotes growth in adolescents, helping to eliminate excessive overbites, improve the fit of teeth, and possibly prevent the need for jaw surgery.

Headgear is utilized to treat patients who have overbites or underbites. Headgear works by gently pulling on your teeth to restrict further forward growth.

herbst appliance

Herbst® Appliance

The Herbst appliance will reduce overbite by moving the lower jaw forward and the upper molars backward. This appliance is typically used for younger children and it will take about 12 to 15 months.

palatal expander

Palatal Expander

Palatal expanders will widen your upper jaw by exerting gentle pressure on your upper molars. Your orthodontist will instruct you about how and when to adjust your palatal expander. When you achieve the desired expansion, you’ll then wear the appliance for several months in order to maintain the expansion and prevent any regression.

Positioners complete the final tooth movements in your orthodontic treatment. With your full cooperation, you should only need to wear the positioner appliance for four to eight weeks.

The goal of retainers is to maintain the position of your newly-straightened teeth after you’ve undergone orthodontics. Retainers may be fixed or removable. Wearing your retainer as instructed is vital for being able to maintain your new smile and preventing any regression of a successful orthodontic treatment.

Separators or Spacers

Separators are small rubber doughnuts that can be placed between your teeth in order to move them slightly apart. These are used so orthodontic bands can be placed during your next appointment.
